Dr. Satishchandra Ogale

Dr. Satishchandra Ogale is the Director of the Research Institute for Sustainable Energy (RISE), TCG-CREST, Kolkata and Emeritus Professor of Physics at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune. He is also a Sr. Advisor, R & D for MIT WPU, Pune.

Prof. Ogale has had a long illustrious career in the field of Education and Research for over 45 years. After completing his Ph.D. in 1980, he served as Physics Faculty at Pune University till 1997; being a Head of the Physics Department from 1992-95. He then worked at the University of Maryland at College Park, USA from 1997 to 2006. He returned to India and joined the CSIR National Chemical Laboratory initially as Ramanujan Fellow and later became the Chief Scientist (2006-2015). Subsequently, he became a full Professor of Physics at IISER Pune (2015-2018), where he continues to work as Emeritus/Adjunct Professor. He is credited with the establishment of Centres for Energy Science at both, CSIR-NCL and IISER Pune.

Dr. Ogale has worked extensively in the field of Advanced Materials; especially on High Temperature Superconductivity, CMR Manganites, Diluted Magnetic Semiconductors and Spintronics. His current research interests are in the field of Clean and Renewable Energy; especially Battery technologies and Green Hydrogen/Clean Fuels. He has over 550 research publications in reputed international pee-reviewed journals, 12 US Patents granted based on research done entirely in India, and three books co-edited for Springer, Wiley and Elsevier. His h-index is 93 with about 41700 citations. He has supervised over 65 Ph.D. students in India and abroad.

CNR Rao Lecture Prize
(2021)

Awarded the prestigious CNR Rao Lecture Prize by the Materials Research Society of India (MRSI), conferred annually to a single materials scientist in the country for outstanding contributions to materials research.

Researcher of the Year (2023)

Honored as “Researcher of the Year 2023” under the Energy Storage category by the Indian Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) for impactful advancements in energy materials and technologies.

International Newton Prize (2017)

Part of the lead team of the DST–EPSRC APEX-II solar energy project, awarded the International Newton Prize by the British Council for excellence in international research collaboration.

 

Ramanujan National Fellowship (2006–2011)

Selected as a Ramanujan National Fellow by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, recognizing exceptional scientific leadership and research excellence.

Best International Collaboration Award (2020)

Recognized as Indian Team Leader of the UK–India SUNRISE program, which received the Best International Collaboration Award by Times Higher Education (THE), one of the most prestigious global recognitions in academia.

MRSI Special Silver Jubilee Medal (2014)

Recipient of the MRSI Special Silver Jubilee Medal for distinguished contributions to materials research, awarded by the Materials Research Society of India.

INSA Young Scientist Medal
(1985)

Awarded the Young Scientist Medal by the Indian National Science Academy (INSA) for significant contributions to physics early in his career.

Sir C. V. Raman Prize (1994)

Awarded the Sir C. V. Raman Prize by the Hari Om Trust and University Grants Commission (UGC) for outstanding experimental research in physics.

National Award for Superconductivity Research (1992)

Recipient of the national award for superconductivity research, instituted by the Materials Research Society of India and the International Conference on Superconductivity (MRSI-ICSC).

Dr. Satishchandra Ogale

Dr. Ogale stood first in the entire state of Maharashtra in the SSC examination in 1969 and ranked first in all school, college and university examinations. He has won many National and International Awards and Recognitions. These include INSA Young Scientist Medal, Dr. N. S. Sathyamurthy award, B. M. Birla Prize, Sir C.V. Raman Prize, MRSI Medal, MRSI special silver jubilee Medal, NCL Scientist of the Year Prize 2010, CNR Rao Lecture prize etc. He has also been a recipient of the first Ramanujan fellowship of DST 2006 and also the Raja Ramanna fellowship 2018. He is an elected fellow of the Indian Academy of Science, National Academy of Science and Maharashtra Academy of Science. He is on the Editorial Advisory Boards of several contemporary high impact journals and has given numerous plenary and keynote talks in International and National Conferences. In 2022 he won the “Researcher of the Year” award of the International Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) for his work on Energy Storage.

He was also recognized by the Lifetime Achievement Award by the International Conference on Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICONN) in 2025. In the Stanford list of top 2% scientists, he ranks 402 amongst 314,640 (top 0.128%) scientists worldwide in Applied Physics.More recently he won the highly prestigious TWAS (The World Academy of Sciences) Award for Physics by UNESCO, a Distinct Honour shared only by 16 Indian Physicists in the last 39 years, including highly distinguished scientists as Prof. ECG Sudarshan, Prof. Govind Swaroop, Prof. TV Ramakrishnan, Prof. Asoke Sen, Prof. Ajay Sood, Prof. Deepak Dhar, Prof. T. Padmanabhan and Prof. DD Sarma.

 

Dr. Ogale serves as an independent director of the companies Pace Digitek and Lineage Power, Bangalore, and was also on the board of Impact Automotive Solutions (a subsidiary of KPIT). He has his own start-up “Materials Magica” and an NGO named “Vigyandeep Science Foundation” established to bring modern science to young India. He is a popular science writer, having written 25 articles in Marathi in the newspaper Sakal. In collaboration with KPIT, his group at IISER Pune demonstrated the first fully indigenous sodium ion battery
